Skincare & Beauty
What is your skincare routine?
I am exhausted by the end of the day, so a long 10-step routine is not feasible, but skincare is still a priority. I stick to the basics: Elta MD UV Clear, tretinoin, Skinfix Barrier+ Foaming Oil Hydrating Cleanser, Obagi Hydrate Facial Moisturizer, and Obagi Elastiderm Serum.
Do you have a go-to skincare product that you can't live without? Why is it your favorite?
Tretinoin. I’ve been using it for ten years. As a dermatology resident, I can always identify people who use it. Some clues: skin looks dewy, very few fine lines, and no dark spots.
What's your favorite beauty tip or secret you've learned from others or discovered yourself?
I use a small spooly to apply minoxidil solution to my eyebrows every night for full, bushy brows!
To keep my makeup intact/ lasting the whole day, I dab my beauty blender in setting spray and then apply it directly onto my foundation. Once my makeup is all done, I use more setting spray to seal the deal.
Lifestyle & Empowerment
How do you balance your busy lifestyle with self-care? What are your favorite rituals for maintaining your well-being?
I’ve gradually made self-care a priority. My schedule is hectic in residency, so I try to savor my wellness moments, whether that’s going for a walk or getting my nails done.
Who is a woman that has inspired you, and what did you learn from her?
Dr. Ruthann Vleguls. She’s a dermatologist in Boston who has inspired me so much. Not only is she a physician, but she’s also a mom, a wife, and a triple-degreed powerhouse (MD, MPH, MBA). Somehow, she does all of this with so much grace. She has taught me that you can actually ‘do it all’ while still having a great life- balance is key.
What are your mantras or affirmations that keep you motivated and grounded?
I live and swear by “this too shall pass.” I adopted it in medical school when I was overwhelmed and felt the weight of the world on my shoulders. I repeated it to myself as much as I needed to, and just like magic, I felt better. It’s all about perspective!
Personal Insights & Fun
If you could describe your aura or energy in a color, what would it be?
I would be green. I’m calm and grounded (proud Libra here) but also outgoing, nurturing, and super social ( born and raised in Puerto Rico). Green signifies balance, which I really resonate with. I can party all night, but I can also study all night. I feel very comfortable with both sides of the coin and take pride in being rational and knowing what I need at any given moment.
What's a hobby or passion that people might not know about you?
I am glued to Planet Earth. I know everything about polar bears and wildebeest migration. Just ask me.
Closing Thoughts
What’s next for you, and what are you most looking forward to?
I’m in my last year of derm residency. I hope to move to New York City to pursue a career in either academia or private practice!
