Weekly Highlights: January 20- January 26
January and February in NYC feel like hibernation season. With the chilly temps, staying in is tempting, but I tried to explore a few spots that have been on my list. Here’s a recap of what I got up to this week:
King Cole Bar
First, I visited the iconic King Cole Bar on the Upper East Side. This chic spot has been around since 1934, famous for its old-school charm and hosting the birthplace of the Bloody Mary. After recent renovations, the bar feels fresh while still maintaining its classic vibe. It’s perfect for a cozy winter evening out.
Lower East Side Highlights
I finally made it to two Lower East Side spots that always seem to have long lines whenever I pass by:
Gotham Burger Social Club
This place gets so much hype, but I have to say, I didn’t quite understand the obsession. I ordered the single burger with a lettuce bun, and honestly, it tasted no different than Shake Shack. Maybe I missed something, but I’m not rushing back.Don Ceviche at Essex Market
Known for its Peruvian chicken, I had high hopes. While the food wasn’t groundbreaking, I’ll give them points for good prices. Note to self: Long lines don’t always mean amazing food! 😂
Soho Grand Hotel
Midweek, I stopped by the Soho Grand Hotel for a change of pace. This spot oozes “see and be seen” vibes, perfect for people-watching. Bonus points for a great selection of non-alcoholic drinks—always appreciated!
Vinegar Hill House
I rounded out the week with a trip to Brooklyn for brunch at Vinegar Hill House. This cozy, quintessential Brooklyn spot is everything you want for a winter brunch. Do not leave without trying the apple sourdough pancakes. They’re heavenly and worth the trek!
The Corpse Flower (Missed It!)
Speaking of Brooklyn, I was bummed to miss the corpse flower at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden. For those who don’t know, this rare flower only blooms for 24-48 hours and is known for its massive size and infamous odor. It’s a must-see for plant enthusiasts, but I’ll have to catch it next time.
